Why is Morbid Angel even considered as death metal?

They don't sound a bit like death metal, they sound more like thrash metal.!! Yes, they had an influence on the entire death metal scene but so did slayer, and slayer is still considered as thrash metal. Morbid angels music is nowhere even close to that of cannibal corpse or deicide, then why the death metal label?
